The Data Center hysteriaโ€ฆanother โ€˜greenโ€™ effort to undermine the free market economy

The willing liberal press outlets have been lately regurgitating the socialist mantra that data centers are going to harm the environment, cause widespread drought and drain citiesโ€™ water supplies so that the โ€˜billionairesโ€™ are the only ones who are going to be able to drink fresh water and take a shower. Here are a couple of examples of the anti-data center hysteria:

Data centers will need to make huge demands on water and power resources if Wall Streetโ€™s historic bet on artificial intelligence is ever going to pay off โ€” demands with serious consequences for the communities hosting them. DSA organizers from chapters working against data centers and their ecological consequences around the country discussed their campaigns on a mass call hosted by the Ecosocialism Transition Committee on Sunday, June 21. This gem supporting โ€˜Ecosocialismโ€™ is authored by an avowed member of the DSA (Democratic Socialists of America).

The battle over data centers cuts to the heart of some very important questions: Who controls societyโ€™s resources? Who gets to decide the fate of our communities: the working-class people who live in them, or unhinged AI billionaires?

These examples of the latest left-leaning Democratic Party socialist dogma are meant to continue the assault on the free market capitalism; the same free market capitalism that has guaranteed our freedoms here in the US. These hysterical claims must be debunked in the conservative media. It is not true that data centers are going to cause draught and it is definitely not true that data centers are enriching billionaires at the expense the poor and workers. It is an economic reality that when opportunity in an economy grows everyone who participates in that economy is a beneficiaryโ€ฆin other words, data centers are and will be in the future, creators of prosperity and more high paying jobs for workers. A rigorous study from the left-leaning Brookings Institution concluded that โ€œWe find that data centers do create local jobsโ€ฆCounties that receive their first large data center see total private employment rise by 4%-5% over five to six years.โ€

The facts about data center creation deny the socialist myths that are being bandied about by socialist politicians and activists. The Florida Water & Pollution Control Operators Association recently offered a data center โ€˜fact checkโ€™ entitled โ€œMyths vs. Reality: Data Centers And Water Usage.โ€ Among the facts:

  • The myth is that data centers are often accused of destroying local water supplies. The reality is that โ€œNationally, all U.S. data centers use <1% of water withdrawals.โ€
  • The myth is that water used by a data center is permanently lost to locals. The reality is that โ€œโ€ฆnot all water withdrawn is consumedโ€ฆ.some data centers use non-potable sourcesโ€“reclaimed wastewater or seawaterโ€“ so theyโ€™re not taking from the communityโ€™s drinking water reserve.โ€ While many data centers do use potable water currentlyโ€ฆโ€Many data centers, especially new ones, strive to avoid using municipal drinking water for coolingโ€ฆ (they use) alternative water sourcesโ€ such as sewage water, undrinkable ground water or even sea water.
  • The myth is that data centers waste drinkable water. The reality is that for current data center creation and older center upgrades, the โ€œtrend is toward water-efficient techโ€ฆclosed-loop cooling that cuts water loss by ~70%; direct liquid cooling at the server level which drastically lowers the need for evaporation; free-air cooling in cooler climates; and using recycled water instead of fresh.โ€

The emergence of AI technology and the consequent development of data centers to provide the enormous accessible storehouses of information that the technology needs, is of extreme importance to the growth of the US economy and to ensuring its place at the forefront of data innovation. We here at I Vote My Vote are convinced that educated voters will ensure that this sort of socialist mythology will not rule the day. It is our goal to provide you the voter the information you need to defend our nation from the hysteria that threatens our constitution and way of life. Help us do that.
